Canning, Dehydrating And Freeze Drying Foods From Your Own Garden Will Assure You Will Never Starve To Death- Better To Be Prepared And Not Need It, Than To Need It And Not Be Prepared
- Remember: Our Ancestors Were The Original Preppers
We have discussed indoor gardening, outdoor gardening, stocking up on freeze dried emergency survival foods and canned goods, but there is much more to becoming self-sufficient than just growing and immediately eating your fresh fruits and vegetables.....and eventually your emergency survival stocks will run out.
Preparing for a day when canned foods are not as easily accessible and shortages or lack of any type of variety should become the rule rather than the exception.
Remember: Our ancestors were the original preppers and much of that knowledge has not been passed down through the generations because of the advanced technology of today.
Face it, today, some teenagers don't even know how to use a manual can opener! (As video below shows!)
Takes brains to prepare ahead of time, to learn what needs to be learned to survive almost any catastrophe's aftermath, if you survive the initial disaster that is.
Warning: The video below is literally cringe-inducing.
CAN SHORTAGES STILL ONGOING....
Back when the COVID lockdowns begun we saw reports that "Coronavirus is causing a can shortage," but as time moved along, a presidential election and a number of other events started dominating the news and information about different kinds of shortages fell to the back burner.
Fast forward to March 2021, while it takes a bit of hunting because the tech giants would rather Americans focus on other issues, we do find that we are still suffering a massive can deficit, which has breweries are still suffering shortages, and we see witness accounts that varieties of canned items, vegetables, fruits, and beverages, are severely limited in comparison to what was seen pre-lockdown.
ANP recently received a photo of a "can" of Asparagus that was purchased, with the reader offering the following description:
A few months ago the Green Giant vegetable brand was selling asparagus in a cardboard type can. It was almost similar to the muffin canisters that are under pressure. However the asparagus was not under pressure.
The tops were metal but the rest is cardboard. One has to think how long would this literally last in the pantry before it starts leaking.

Granted I do not buy canned asparagus, so personally I wouldn't have noticed the difference in cans for the extra long, but the readers obviously enjoys the product and noticed the difference.
CANNING YOU OWN FOOD......
Another reader sent a link to an online store,Webstaurant Store, where food can be purchased in bulk. Link Here.
His message:
At this time they still have things like organic rice in stock $35 for 25lbs.
I have a suggestion for those that need quality nutrition but have limited funds making animal protein very hard to get. I based the backbone of my food storage on a verse in the book of Ezekiel.
Ezekiel 4:9-17
Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself.
When combined these grains and beans not only provide a great variety of vitamins and minerals but also have all the essential amino acids for a complete protein like what is found in animal proteins. I was able to source most of these ingredients at a semi local farm in Michigan. Most of them are whole grains or beans and sealed in American made Mylar bags with O2 absorbers so they can be sprouted when the time comes.
Hopefully this will help someone. Thank you for your hard work.
We recommend getting paperback or hardcovers versus Kindle/Ebooks because then the knowledge is at your fingertips whether you have Internet or not.
The majority of items needed for canning are generally already in your kitchen, such as knifes for cutting the food, a cutting board, cloths to wipe jar rims or spills, timer or clock, or narrow rubber spatula to removed trapped air before sealing.
We won't linking to those items because as I said, most have these items in their kitchen already.
Other items needed include: Jar lifter: essential for easy removal of hot jars. Jar funnel: helps in pouring and packing of liquid and small food items into canning jars. Lid wand: magnetized wand for removing treated jar lids from hot water.
There are very inexpensive canning kits that provide the aforementioned items along with a few others that can be used going forward.
A large supply of jars and lids can provide enough resources to can enough foods to last until your next growing season, for those that only grow outdoors, and year round for those that also maintain an indoor garden.
Some prefer getting the jars and lids, with the sealing rings together, and other prefer to buy them separately. That is a personal choice for each person wanting to learn how to can safely.
Another way to store food that lasts a long time is to freeze dry your foods, or dehydrate them, saving room on storage, maintaining a longer shelf life and making preparation extremely easy.
Some like a mixture of both and luckily for consumers, now these machines are much less expensive than they used to be (some are still expensive dependent on the size, quality), and some make it so one can use either function with just one machine.
Any suggestions for different resources, less expensive but quality items, online links and videos, etc.... are all welcome. Please share with each other in the comment section because even those very advanced in canning, dehydrating and freeze drying foods, can always either learn something new or be reminded of something they have forgotten.
BOTTOM LINE
We are living in a tumultuous and volatile world, with multiple countries hostile to the U.S., cyber attacks being a regular every day occurrence, open borders that any terrorists can get through, domestic civil unrest, and a number of other issues that make it critical to at least be prepared for as many scenarios as possible.
Our ancestors were the original preppers and it is time for all of us to get back to the basics and at least learn enough to survive if all hell breaks loose.
Better to be prepared and not need it, than to need it and not be prepared.
