Fox News hired a former top aide to Andrew Cuomo who admitted to covering up New York State’s nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Melissa DeRosa will join Fox as a contributor and co-host of a new podcast, “The Girls,” which will debut Oct. 1, Fox News Media said in a press release Monday. DeRosa served in Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration until resigning in August 2021 amid allegations that the governor “sexually harassed” government employees.
Earlier that year, DeRosa admitted on a conference call with Democratic lawmakers that the Cuomo administration covered up the number because they feared the scandal would be politicized by then-President Donald Trump, who could use the Department of Justice to launch a probe.
“He starts tweeting that we killed everyone in nursing homes,” DeRosa said, according to the New York Post. “He starts going after [then-New Jersey Gov. Phil] Murphy, starts going after [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom, starts going after [Michigan Gov.] Gretchen Whitmer.”
“We were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation,” DeRosa said.
She also apologized to lawmakers for putting them in a tough political position.
In 2020, the Daily Caller News Foundation exclusively reported that New York omitted an unknown number of coronavirus deaths in reports on residents of nursing homes and adult care facilities. A 2021 report from the New York State Assembly found that Cuomo had personally edited the Department of Health’s numbers to undercount nursing home coronavirus deaths by thousands.
Although officials knew the number of deaths among nursing home residents stood at around 10,000, the government’s report stated it was only 6,500.
DeRosa has frequently criticized left-wing Democrats and compared candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, characterizing them as “parasites.”
“They cannot win on their own by creating their own party, so they are going to latch onto the Democratic Party and feed off of it, with the overall goal of taking it over and killing it,” she said in June.
DeRosa also presents herself as a Democrat who believes the party’s left flank has crossed a line regarding Israel.
She slammed Mamdani in January after he condemned an antisemitic attack on a synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi.
“Everyone knows exactly where you stand, which is why you still can’t bring yourself to denounce the disgusting, vile phrase ‘globalize the intifada,’ and why it took you over 24 hours to denounce Hamas: a terrorist organization funded by Iran,” she wrote in response. “The mask is off. The campaign is over, and while some weak politicians & some in the press may still give you a pass, with each passing day, more people see exactly who you are—and you will never be the future of the Democratic Party.”
