An 18-year-old was charged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Wednesday for allegedly planning a “mass casualty attack in support of ISIS” to take place at the Mall of America this month.
The suspect, an American citizen of Somali descent, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, was arrested Tuesday and faces charges alleging he sought to acquire an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition with the intent to commit terrorism and provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said at a press briefing Wednesday.
“Today’s charges demonstrate that the threat of terrorism in support of ISIS and other foreign terrorist organizations is active and continuing,” Rosen said, before thanking the Minnesota-based FBI and the city of Bloomington police.
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office, Christopher Dotson, said that Mohamud had allegedly described himself as “100 percent committed” to what Dotson referred to as his “planned jihad journey.”
Mohamud had allegedly met with someone whom he believed to be a member of ISIS on Tuesday to attempt to purchase an AK-47 rifle and ammunition, with the intent to use it in a high-traffic public area.
“Over the course of this investigation, Mohamud repeatedly expressed support of foreign terrorist organizations,” Dotson said. “And because he felt like he could not travel abroad to fight for these organizations, he instead expressed his intent to commit a terrorist inspired attack here in the United States in Minnesota.”
An affidavit joining the criminal complaint says that Mohamud had messaged a contact stating that he wanted to attack the mall “because its owned by jewish [sic] so if i kill even 30 people noone would go there anymore. I want to harm the jew just like the brothers in australia bondi beach harmed the jews.”
Mohamud continued, according to the affidavit, noting that he wanted to die a martyr and hoped that killing white people would ensure that he was shot and killed by officers instead of being sent to a prison where he said he was afraid he’d get raped, according to the affidavit.
“I wanna get martyred inshallah but if i get sent to jail and kill my neighbour with fire or knife then ill be sent to jail the police wont kill me ill get raped there man [crying emoji] if im gonna do it in america i better die in any way other than that,” Mohamud allegedly said. “Thats why i wanna save up to go to another country or.. get a gun here and just start killing a bunch of white ppl (because a lot of white ppl are kuffar) but how do i know if theyre muslim or not.”
Dotson described the messages Mohamud had allegedly sent to others as “chilling,” as they documented the “idolization of ideologically motivated violence, a callous disregard for the sanctity of human life, a blind hatred of people of other faiths, and a cold commitment to carrying out his vision of violence in our community.”
Citing court records, Dotson said that Mohamud had pledged his allegiance to ISIS over a year ago and that the teen had allegedly sought his own martyrdom through his planned attack.
Rosen said that the suspect had stated he intended to kill somewhere between 30 and 60 people at the nation’s largest mall.
“This FBI is finding terrorists BEFORE they can attack Americans,” FBI Director Kash Patel said after the charges had been announced, “and we will keep using every resource we have to dismantle their networks across this country.”
