The Fascinating History of The U.S. Secret Service On Its 160th Anniversary, From The Creation of The Bureau In 1865 To The Eventual Funding In 1951

The Secret Service Bureau was created July 5, 1865 by President Lincoln as a division of the Department of the Treasury to hunt down counterfeiters as nearly 1/3 of all currency in circulation after the Civil War was counterfeit. By 1867 the Bureau's jurisdiction was expanded to include criminals like the KKK, distillers, smugglers, and other organizations violating federal law. The Bureau was officially recognized by Congress as a distinct organization within the Treasury in 1882 but funding for the organization was not provided until 1951.

President Cleveland was the Bureau's first part-time Presidential protection gig in 1902, after President McKinley was assassinated in 1901. Congress tasked the Bureau with the protection of US Presidents but only 2 men were assigned to the President. It took until 1842 before a permanent security force (a Captain and 3 other men) was assigned to the White House.�Franklin Pierce (who happens to be a 4th great uncle of mine on my maternal side) was the first president to have a full-time bodyguard starting in 1853, setting the operational standard that is still in use today.

After WW2, the Bureau changed the way they operated on the White House grounds, establishing a strict protocol for visitors. Luckily their goal to paint the White House in camouflage colors and remove all the skylights were vetoed by Mrs. Roosevelt.� Over the years, the protection component of the Bureau has expanded to include protection of the family members (or widow) of the President as well as state visitors. In addition to its purpose of protecting the President and other dignitaries, the Secret Service continues to investigate other federal crimes now including cyber crimes.

There are currently about 8,000 agents in the Secret Service "united by a mission that demands excellence, resilience, and steadfast loyalty." To celebrate the 160th anniversary of the founding of the US Secret Service, President Trump issued the Proclamation 160TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE, 2025�proclaiming:

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim July 5, 2025, as the 160th Anniversary of the United States Secret Service.� I call upon all Americans to offer our unending gratitude and respect to the 8,000 employees of the United States Secret Service in more than 150 offices across the country and abroad that serve on the edge of danger to defend the safety and security of our communities and uphold the sovereignty and strength of our Republic.

On July 2, 2025, the White House published the article��EXTRAORDINARY�: President Trump Drives Illegal Border Crossings to a New Historic Low�explaining that only 6,070 illegal aliens were encountered at our Southern Border in June. None of these illegal aliens were released into the interior of the US.

Democrats keep telling us that most of the illegal aliens are "doing the jobs Americans don't want to do" like work at farms. The NY Times is saying that farm workers are staying away from farms. Reuters�says California farmers are lacking 70% of their workers due to ICE enforcement. Yet the�American Enterprise Institute�explains there is a special "seasonal job" visa, H-2A Agricultural Guest Worker Program. These workers account for 12% of all farm workers. It is up to the farm owner to file for the upfront H-2A visa costs (including housing and transportation). Approximately 400,000 H-2A visas are expected to be issued in 2025. In addition, Secretary Rollins says only about 1% of illegal aliens are involved in American farming. The other 99% are most likely involved in illegal activities, after all, with no documentation the only thing they can do is act illegally.

The moral is if non-citizens present in our country legally, the will have the paperwork to prove it. Only those here illegally need to be concerned about ICE raids.
